Christian human rights groups in Pakistan are urging local courts to reject Sharia punishments for the blasphemy accused in the Muslim majority country. Last week, a Peshawar High Court bench issued notices to the attorney general for Pakistan and provincial advocate general over a petition seeking orders for the government to remove the option of punishment other than the death penalty for blasphemy from the Pakistan Penal Code. The petitioner claimed the issue of an alternative punishment of life imprisonment had already been decided by the Federal Shariat Court, but it had not been implemented by federal and provincial governments.…

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist party are making a serious bid for electoral victories in three states that have sizeable minority Muslim populations. But the Bharatiya Janata Party has for years been accused of stoking religious polarization and discriminating against minorities, and faces stiff challenges making inroads in the local elections. Top BJP leaders, including Modi, have been campaigning heavily to win West Bengal and dislodge the state’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, as well as retain power in northeastern Assam and expand the party’s influence in the southern states. Americans today are much better informed about Bangladesh than they were when Henry Kissinger described it (not without reason) as a “basket case” in 1971, the year it achieved independence. That label stuck to Bangladesh like a malign limpet, and proud Bangladeshis have for decades resented the shadow it cast over their resilient and entrepreneurial land. Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the independence of Bangladesh—formerly East Pakistan. On March 26, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the wildly popular secessionist leader of the Bengalis, declared independence from the Punjabi-dominated Pakistan of which it was an incongruous part. (A country of two…
We love anniversaries because they give us a reason to remember, mourn or celebrate. As the first phase of elections in Assam and West Bengal rolls around, it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Bangladesh, which is on March 26.Underreported and unacknowledged, the “long partition” from 1947 to 1971 that led to the creation of the republic was one of the bloodiest in modern times. This year also marks the birth centenary of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But what is the significance of the “long partition” to these two elections? The two Indian…
The United States and its allies are stepping up pressure on China in a unified show of force against Beijing’s alleged repression of Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority, in the country’s western region of Xinjiang. The US State Department estimates up to 2 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities have passed through a sprawling network of detention centers across the region, where former detainees allege they were subjected to intense political indoctrination, forced labor, torture, and even sexual abuse. Human rights groups and overseas Uyghur activists have also accused the Chinese government of forced cultural assimilation and coerced birth…

In a recent PIL in the Supreme Court, Waseem Rizvi, former chairman of the Shia Waqf Board in UP, has demanded the removal of 26 verses from the holy Quran claiming that terrorists used these verses to “promote jihad”. Earlier as well, he had written to the Prime Minister, asking him to close down all madrasas since these breed “terrorists”. While Rizvi is trying to stir a hornet’s nest, the trend of involving the Supreme Court in religious matters is not a tenable one. True, the apex court decided the triple talaq law which was of paramount importance, keeping in…

Photographer: Gabby Jones/Bloomberg Photographer: Gabby Jones/Bloomberg Facebook Inc. said Chinese hackers used fake accounts in an effort to trick some of the country’s ethnic Uyghur minority into clicking on malicious links. The effort, which Facebook described as “highly targeted,” saw a group of hackers create fake personalities on Facebook to build relationships with Uyghurs, a Muslim ethnic group in China. The hackers posed as journalists, students and human rights advocates to convince their targets to click on links that sent them to malicious websites, which could then infect their phones.Facebook said fewer…
THE attack that the Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, carried out on Tuesday on groups of students, mainly comprising left-leaning organisations, who held protests against the scheduled visit of India’s prime minister Narendra Modi near the Teacher-Student Centre on the campus of the University of Dhaka is worrying on a few counts.
