Five-IPL bound Proteas stars to miss Bangladesh Test series

Five-IPL bound Proteas stars to miss Bangladesh Test series

Five Proteas stars have put the Indian Premier League (IPL) before representing their country in two Tests against Bangladesh later this month.

Proteas Test skipper Dean Elgar – who does not have an IPL contract – said on his arrival from New Zealand that the choice between Test duty and the IPL will test the loyalty of his players.

As it turns out, none of those players have elected to play for South Africa and miss out on the riches on offer at the IPL.

As a result, the Proteas will be without key bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen, while Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram are also unavailable.

THE 11 SOUTH AFRICANS WHO WILL BE IN IPL ACTION ARE:

Kagiso Rabada: $1.233 million (R18.75 million)
    Faf du Plessis: $933 000 (R14.2 million)
    Quinton de Kock: $900 000 (R13.7 million)
    Anrich Nortje: $866 000 (R13.2 million)*
    Marco Jansen: $560 000 (R8.5 million)
    David Miller: $400 000 (R6.1 million)
    Dewald Brevis: $400 000 (R6.1 million)
    Aiden Markram: $346 000 (R5.3 million)
Rassie van der Dussen: $133 000 (R2 million)
    Dewaine Pretorius: $66 000 (R1 million)
    Lungi Ngidi: $66 000 (R1 million)

Anrich Nortje continues to recover from a hip injury and wasn’t considered for selection, nor was Zubayr Hamza for unknown ‘personal reasons’.

Khaya Zondo, Daryn Dupavillon and Lizaad Williams were the new faces in the 15-man Proteas Test squad named on Thursday.

Markram’s absence has been offset in part by the return of top-order batsman Keegan Petersen.

Duanne Olivier is as the most experienced fast bowler in the squad with Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Wiaan Mulder and Daryn Dupavillon providing support.

The spin department remains unaffected with both Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer included.

Cricket South Africa’s current MOU with SACA states that CSA is not at liberty to refuse players the opportunity to take part in the IPL, as CSA and SACA look to balance the livelihoods and opportunities of players and their national duties.

CSA convenor of selectors Victor Mpitsang said they’ll simply have to find a way to cope without their IPL contingent.

“The loss of the IPL players is not ideal, but we back the CSA system, its ever growing pipeline and most of all, the players we have selected,” Mpitsang said.

“Every member of the team is selected based on the excellence that they have shown over an extended period of time.

“There is no better opportunity for them than now, to show us what they have to offer the Proteas on this highly anticipated occasion.”

The first Test will take place at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead from 31 March to 4 April while the second and final clash is scheduled for St George’s Park in Gqeberha from 8-12 April.

    Proteas squad:

Dean Elgar (captain), Temba Bavuma, Daryn Dupavillon, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Duanne Olivier, Keegan Petersen, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams, Khaya Zondo
