The Hindu Ain Pronoyon e Nagorik Udyog Coalition has issued a statement protesting the propaganda against a number of individuals and organisations that are not involved in the formulation of the Hindu inheritance law.
The coalition recently formulated a draft of the Hindu inheritance law for equal rights of Hindu citizens to the property of their parents.
It’s the Hindu citizens who have demanded formulation of the law. And Hindu citizens from various human rights organisations are involved in the process. It involves not only Manusher Jonno Foundation, but also Ain O Salish Kendra, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), PRIP Trust, Naripokkho, RDRS and Banchte Shekha, the coalition said in a statement yesterday.
“We feel ashamed as the name of The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam has been mentioned at a press conference of Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajote over formulation of the Hindu law.
“He [Mahfuz Anam] is not connected in any way with the coalition and there is no involvement of him with the issue,” said the statement.
“Besides, Shaheen Anam is the executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, but she is not connected with the formulation of the law either.
“A propaganda is being spread against them and we are expressing our sadness over this and protesting it.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called for the formulation of Hindu inheritance law while speaking at a programme on the occasion of Janmashtomi festival in 2016.
She also mentioned about equal rights of men and women on Jatiya Ain Sohayota Dibos (National Law Assistance Day) in 2019. Later, the Hindu Ain Pronoyon e Nagorik Udyog Coalition formulated a draft of Hindu inheritance law, aiming to ensure equal rights of Hindu citizens to the property of their parents.
Those who signed the statement on behalf of the coalition are Aroma Dutta, MP; Nina Goswami, Ain O Salish Kendra; Dipabali Chakrabarty, Hindu Bouddha Christian Parishad; advocate Ramlal Raha, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad; Rina Roy, a human rights activist; Arpita Das, Manusher Jonno Foundation; advocate Tajul Islam, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services trust (BLAST); Rita Das Roy, Naripokkho; Sabrina Sultana, RDRS; Kalpana Basu, human rights activist, Banchte Shekha; Ruma Halder, a teacher; and Krishna Chanda and Sanchita Talukder, development activists.
