The youth had been languishing in jail for over six months on charges of defaming a Hefazat leader on social media
Jumon Das, a youth from Sunamganj implicated in a Digital Security Act (DSA) case, was released from jail on Tuesday, five days after the High Court granted him bail.
“Jumon walked out of the prison at around 7pm on Tuesday after the High Court order reached the Sunamganj jail,” said his lawyer Debangshu Shekhar Das.
At the time, Jumon’s mother Niva Rani Das was waiting outside for him.
She said she was so grateful that her son was finally out. “He will never do such a thing again. We will keep an eye on him.”
The youth had been languishing in jail for over six months on charges of defaming a Hefazat-e-Islam leader on social media.
Last Thursday, the High Court granted him bail for a year in the case.
On March 15, Hefazat held a rally in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila, which was addressed by its late chief Junaid Babunagari and the then joint secretary general Mamunul Haque.
The same day, 25-year-old Jumon said on a Facebook post that Mamun’s speech would disrupt communal harmony.
Hefazat supporters demonstrated in the area the next day, accusing Jumon of hurting religious sentiments. That led to police detaining the Hindu man to calm the protesters.

On March 17, supporters of the radical group attacked and looted the homes of the Hindu community at Noagaon village in Shalla upazila.
The attackers vandalized at least 90 homes before a huge number of law enforcers from Shalla and Dirai police stations brought the situation under control.
The same day police formally arrested Jumon under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and produced him in court, which sent him to jail.
Section 54 allows police to make an arrest without a warrant based on suspicious activities.
On March 22, police initiated the DSA case and formally arrested him the next day.
His petition for bail was rejected by the Sunamganj Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, prompting his lawyers to take the case to the judge’s court.
His counsels moved the High Court after the judge’s court also turned down the bail plea.
Since the incident in March, several political, social and human rights organizations had demonstrated to demand Jumon’s release.
