    Priest arrested over attempted rape in Sylhet

    When a young woman went to the priest for religious teachings, he and his accomplice her to an isolated spot next to the temple, where they pinned her down and tried to rape her

    Police on Wednesday arrested a Hindu priest for trying to rape a young woman at Bagha in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet.

    The arrested was identified as Pran Govinda Das alias Forrest Chauhan, 46, son of Kalu Chauhan of Silimpur village under Delduar upazila of Tangail.

    The woman filed a case against the priest and his accomplice Dipankar Dev Tapan with Golapganj model police station after the duo attempted to rape her next to a local temple in Kalakona village of Bagha union Tuesday. 

    According to local and police sources, Pran Govinda Das used to serve as the priest of Sri Sri Giridhari Jiu Mandir in Kalakona village of Bagha union of the upazila. 

    Hindu devotees of different ages, including the youth of the area, often visited the priest for religious teachings.

    On Tuesday evening, when a young woman from the house next to the temple went to priest Govinda Das for that exact reason, he and his accomplice Dipankar lured her to an isolated spot next to the temple, where they pinned her down and tried to rape her. 

    However, hearing the woman’s screams, locals immediately rushed to the spot and apprehended the priest. At that time Dipankar fled the scene.

    After locals gave the priest a good beating, he confessed to the heinous act.

    Golapganj model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Harunur Rashid Chowdhury said: “The priest has been sent to jail following a court order. We are trying to arrest his accomplice as well.”
