01/03/2022 Bangladesh/Myanmar (International Christian Concern) – A Rohingya Christian man in Cox’s Bazar refugee camp, Bangladesh, was beaten with a stick by the camp authorities. He was previously harassed by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army earlier last year.
Asia News reports that Saydul Amin, 20, told the News that “They accused me of being involved in the business of yaba (the local term for drugs), but they did not get anything from me, they beat me for false accusations,” the young man explained.
Originally from Myanmar, Saydul Amin left his country in 2017 to flee ethnic persecution against the Rohingya committed by the Burmese Army. As ethnic Rohingya are predominantly Muslim, being a Christian could mean persecution and discrimination. Many have to hide their faith in order not to be targeted.
Saydul Amin was accused by local Muslims of converting recently, though he has always been a Christian. He said after he revealed his Christian faith, he has been persecuted. He no longer feels safe in the camp.
David Sunir, a leader of the Christian community in Camp 13 in Balukhaly, where Amin lives, said that earlier this year he was also targeted by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army –which purposefully targets Rohingya Christians. “We Christians are a minority, and we live in fear,” he said. There are around 1,500 Christians in Cox’s Bazar camp, home to over 880,000 Rohingya refugees.
