The Criminal Investigation Department arrested Hefazat-e-Islam central leader and former member of parliament for Sunamganj-3 constituency Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury at his Bonkalapara house in Sylhet on Friday over recent vandalism.
The CID said that he was placed before a judicial magistrate court in Brahmanbaria.
Shahinur Pasha was the central legal affairs secretary of Hefazat’s recently dissolved committee and central vicepresident of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh.
Shahinur Pasha is also an accused in more than one case filed over the 2013 violence carried out by the Islamist hardliner Hefazat.
The home minister, meanwhile, on Friday said that the law would follow its own course and none would be spared.
The New Age correspondent in Munshiganj reported that the minister visited affected houses at Madhupur of Sirajdikhan upazila in the district where houses were attacked, ransacked and torched during the nationwide strike on March 28 enforced following the deaths of protestors during the visit of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi in Bangladesh.
The minister said that the demonstrators wanted to implement its political agenda by causing anarchy, and those who were involved would be taken to justice.
The minister was accompanied by the Dhaka range deputy inspector general of police Habibur Rahman and Sirajdikhan upazila chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed, among others.
The anti-Modi protest left 17 people killed and 151 cases were filed, and over one thousand were arrested.
Arrests and the remand in custody of influential organisers and leaders at Hefazat, however, continued, the officials said.
A total of 125 leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam were arrested so far in cases filed with Hathazari, Patiya and Rangunia police stations, police officers said.
