A case was filed under the Digital Security Act with Shahbagh Police Station against Dhaka University law department professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon for allegedly making derogatory remark about the Hindus and their religious belief in a Facebook post.
Bangladesh Hindu Juba Parishad general secretary Amit Bhowmik filed the case with the police station on Sunday.
Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge (investigation) Mahfuzul Haque told New Age on Tuesday.
‘The case was filed on August 1 under the Digital Security Act and Cyber Crime unit is handling this case,’ said Mahfuzul Haque.
It was alleged that Hafizur made the post with an intention of destroying sectarian harmony, creating religious extremism, destabilising non-sectarian culture of Bangladesh and also for making the government embarrassed.
Earlier on July 24, Amit Bhowmik also filed a written complaint with Shahbagh Police Station against the teacher over the issue.
Later on July 31, a delegation of Bangladesh Hindu Lawyers’ Council led by its president and Lawyer Sumon Kumar Roy met DU vice-chancellor professor Akhtaruzzaman and also submitted a petition demanding dismissal of law department professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman over the issue.
Hafizur, however, said that he had already apologised for his Facebook post made on July 23.
On July 23, DU law department professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman made a Facebook post in an apparent joke involving Bhagwan with milk and wine.
Being criticised, the teacher deleted his post on July 24 and said that he did not post that with any intention of humiliating the Hindu community.
‘I understood my mistake and apologised and after apologising, there is nothing left,’ he said.
