Extend maternity leave, urges Mizoram church | Guwahati News - Times of India
AIZAWL: The largest and most powerful church in the Christian-dominated state of the northeastern state of Mizoram, the Presbyterian Church, decided to make an appeal to the state government to prolong maternity leave for women who delivered children in order to encourage married couples to have more babies.
The resolution was passed by delegates of the Synod conference, the highest decision making authority of the Prebyterian Church on Saturday.
The annual Synod conference was held at Republic veng local church in Aizawl from Tuesday and concluded on Sunday while the delegates discussed 49 agendas on Friday and Saturday.
During the discussion, the majority of the delegates from across the state said that the increase in the population of the church members and the Mizos as a whole has become important for survival and prosperity.
They said the population can be increased only by having more babies and one of the most important encouragements is extension of the days of maternity leave for women working in the state government as an incentive.
The decision to appeal the state government to prolong maternity leave for women who have more babies has been accepted and the Synod conference authorised the Synod Executive Committee, the second highest decision-making authority of the Presbyterian Church to pursue the matter with the state government.
Not only the Presbyterian Church, the Baptist Church of Mizoram, the second largest church in the state, and other church denominations are also batting for baby boom in the state for survival as a minority religious community in the country, while the central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the largest and most powerful civil society also supported the moves.
The churches and the YMA were of the opinion that the Mizos as a tribe and a religious minority should increase population for survival and had been encouraging couples to have more children.
They said the decadal growth in the population of the state, especially among the Mizo Christians, have declined steadily over the past years while the population growth of the Chakmas, regarded by many Mizos as foreigners, increased abnormally, endangering the balanced demographic growth.
The Baptist Church of Mizoram had even offered monetary incentives to the couples who have more children, while the Presbyterian Church displayed hoardings encouraging married couples to bear more children terming it a “patriotic proposition”.
A state minister also took the cue and distributed Rs 2.5 lakh to 17 women who delivered maximum number of children, on October 12 and awarded Rs 1 lakh cash incentive to a woman who bore 15 children.
Tourism minister Robert Romawia Royte, at the function, said the incentives to mothers to have more children was given in accordance with “more children drive” launched by different church denominations and the central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA).
