Karachi: Police in Karachi swiftly arrested the person accused of ransacking and desecrating a Hindu temple in the city and lodged a criminal case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act-1997 (ATA).
An anti-terrorism court in Karachi has remanded the accused to police custody until December 28, 2021.
The Eidgah Police station of Karachi initially lodged the criminal case against the accused under Section 295 of the Pakistan Penal Code that deals with incidents related to damaging or defiling a place of worship with the intent to insult the religion of any class of people.
Later on, the Karachi Police, on the directives of the Sindh government, also inserted the Section-7 of the ATA after determining that an attack on a place of worship belonging to a religious minority is an act of terrorism.
The people of the area staged a protest sit-in outside Narayanpura Hindu Temple in Ranchore Lines area of the city after the attack incident.
Sindh Minister for Minorities’ Affairs, Giyanchand Israni, rushed to temple’s site to persuade protestors to end their agitation.
The Minorities Affairs’ Minister assured the protestors that the damage done to the Narayanpura Temple in the attack would be compensated for within 24 hours.
The senior relevant officials of Karachi Police briefed the Minister about the steps taken to beef up the security at the temple and progress made so far in investigating the attack.
Irsrani said the attack was a highly sorrowful instance that should not have taken place.
He said that Pakistan was a peaceful country where members of religious minorities had been given equal rights in accordance with the Constitution.
He said certain miscreants were being used to commit mischief in attempts to defame the country.
